Infection Control

What is Infection Control?

Definition
Infection control is a crucial aspect of healthcare that focuses on preventing the spread of infections within healthcare settings and the community, employing practices like hand hygiene, using personal protective equipment (PPE), and implementing isolation precautions.

Key Principles and Practices:

1) Standard Precautions:
These are basic infection control practices that should be followed for all patients, regardless of their suspected or known infection status.

Hand Hygiene: Washing hands frequently with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rubs is a cornerstone of infection control.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Using appropriate PPE, such as gloves, gowns, masks, and eye protection, to protect healthcare workers from exposure to infectious agents.

Safe Injection Practices: Using sterile needles and syringes, and proper disposal of sharps, to prevent bloodborne infections.

Environmental Cleaning: Regularly cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and equipment to prevent the spread of infections.

2) Transmission-Based Precautions:
These are additional precautions used for patients known or suspected to be infected with specific pathogens.

Contact Precautions: Used for patients with infections that can be transmitted by direct or indirect contact, such as MRSA or C. difficile.

Droplet Precautions: Used for patients with infections that can be transmitted through respiratory droplets, such as influenza or pertussis.

Airborne Precautions: Used for patients with infections that can be transmitted through airborne particles, such as measles or tuberculosis.
